Rwanda's mountain gorilla story is one of conservation's greatest successes. In the 1980s the species teetered on the edge of extinction. Today there are over 1,000 mountain gorillas - a number that has grown steadily for three decades - and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park sits at the centre of that recovery. Every permit sold directly funds the rangers, vets, and researchers who made it happen.


Beyond the gorillas, Rwanda surprises. Nyungwe Forest in the southwest holds 13 primate species and Africa's oldest rainforest canopy. Lake Kivu offers highland calm and dramatic scenery. And Kigali - one of Africa's cleanest, safest, most forward-looking capitals - makes a compelling start or end to any itinerary.

Long Dry Season

The prime window for gorilla trekking. Dry trails, clear skies, and the full Virunga volcano landscape visible. Book permits 6–12 months ahead.

December – February

Short Dry Season

The second peak trekking window. Lush green landscape after the rains, good visibility, and slightly fewer visitors than the long dry season.

October – November

Short Rains

Short Rains Light afternoon showers, excellent birding in Nyungwe, and good-value rates. Gorilla trekking remains fully operational.

Long Rains

The heaviest rainfall of the year. Some trails are muddy and challenging. Rates drop significantly. Gorilla trekking continues but requires proper preparation.
