Animals on the crater floor
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera
The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed ancient volcano 20km across and 600 metres deep. Its natural walls form a permanent enclosure supporting around 25,000 large animals year-round. Black rhino, lion, elephant, leopard, and buffalo - the full Big Five = are all resident. Many guests complete the checklist before lunch.
The crater rim sits at 2,286 meters - cool, misty in the mornings, with views that stop conversation. Most of our Northern Circuit itineraries include at least a full day on the crater floor. The descent itself, on winding dirt tracks through montane forest, is extraordinary before you've even reached the bottom.

Everything you need to know about Ngorongoro Safari
What should I pack for Ngorongoro?
Layers are essential. The crater rim sits at 2,286 metres and temperatures at night and early morning can drop significantly - bring a fleece or light jacket regardless of the time of year. The crater floor itself is warmer during the day but cools quickly after sunset. Most guests are surprised by the cold if they're coming straight from lower-altitude parks like Tarangire or the Serengeti. Comfortable walking shoes are also useful for rim walks and lodge grounds. We share a full packing list after booking.
Can I see black rhino in Ngorongoro Crater?
Yes - Ngorongoro is one of the few places in East Africa where black rhino are regularly sighted. Around 30–40 individuals resident on the crater floor; sightings are far more reliable than in open parks.
How long should I spend at Ngorongoro?
Most itineraries include one full day on the crater floor. Two days is ideal if you want a dawn descent and a full morning drive. Gates open at 6am.
Is the crater cold?
The rim can reach 10–15°C in the evenings. The crater floor is warmer but cool in the mornings. We always brief guests on what to pack.
Do you combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti?
Almost always. You typically drive through the NCA to reach the Serengeti. Most Northern Circuit itineraries include both.
Are there walking safaris in Ngorongoro?
Walking is restricted on the crater floor. Guided walks are possible on the rim and in the wider Conservation Area, including Maasai village visits.
