Victoria Falls is not just a waterfall. It is a curtain of water nearly two kilometres wide, plunging 108 metres into a narrow gorge and generating a roar and a mist cloud that can be seen from 50 kilometres away. Standing on the rim - drenched by the spray, deafened by the thunder - is one of those experiences that rearranges something in your chest.

But the falls are only part of the story. The surrounding area has become one of Southern Africa's great adventure hubs. Chobe National Park - just 1.5 hours away in Botswana - holds some of the highest elephant densities on earth. The Zambezi River below the falls runs Grade 5 rapids. And the seasonal Devil's Pool, where you can swim to the very lip of the falls, is one of Africa's most audacious experiences.

Victoria Falls by seasons

February – May

Peak Flow - Maximum Thunder

The Zambezi is at its highest. The falls are at full power - the roar is deafening, the mist is total. You will be soaked on the viewing path. The most dramatic time to visit.

June – August

Dry Season - Best Activities

Water levels drop enough for clearer views of the rock face. This is the peak safari season in Chobe. White water rafting at its best. Comfortable temperatures.

September – January

Low Water - Devil's Pool Open

The Zambezi is at its lowest. The falls are quieter but the views are clearest. Devil's Pool opens from August - swim at the lip of the falls, 108m above the gorge.

November – December

Green Season Begins

The rains begin and the landscape turns green. Activity operators are still running. Rates are lower and visitor numbers drop. A good-value window with fewer crowds.

Which side is better - Zambia or Zimbabwe?

Both sides offer different perspectives. Zimbabwe gives you the frontal panoramic view of the full curtain. Zambia puts you closer to the edge - including Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool. We recommend crossing to both if your schedule allows.
