Why Climb Marangu

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail up Mount Kilimanjaro, and the only one where you sleep in huts rather than tents. Nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route," it approaches from the southeast, climbs past Mandara and Horombo huts, and summits at Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters before returning the same way. What sets Marangu apart is comfort and simplicity — you sleep on a bed in a shared hut, not in a tent on the ground, which appeals to first-timers and anyone who would rather not camp at altitude.

What to Expect

  • Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

Drive from Arusha to the Marangu Gate (1,830m) — the original Kilimanjaro trailhead and the starting point of the mountain's oldest route. Register with rangers and begin climbing through dense montane rainforest on a well-maintained trail. Mandara Hut is a collection of A-frame wooden huts in a forest clearing. Optional short detour to the Maundi Crater viewpoint. Altitude: 2,720m. Accommodation: Mandara Hut (A-frame). Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

The forest opens into moorland as you gain altitude, with the first views of Kibo summit cone appearing above the cloud line. Giant heather and the distinctive tree senecios of Kilimanjaro begin to appear. Horombo Hut is the largest camp on the Marangu route — a cluster of A-frames in the moorland zone with wide views. Altitude: 3,720m. Accommodation: Horombo Hut (A-frame). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 3: Horombo Hut — Acclimatization Day

Rest day at Horombo — standard on the 6-day version and highly recommended. Use the day for a guided acclimatization walk up toward Mawenzi Peak or the Zebra Rocks, climbing to around 4,000m before returning to sleep at 3,720m. This classic 'climb high, sleep low' day significantly improves your summit night odds. Altitude: 3,720m (camp). Accommodation: Horombo Hut (A-frame). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Cross the Saddle — the high-altitude desert plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Vegetation disappears entirely as you enter the alpine desert zone. Kibo Hut (4,700m) sits at the base of the summit wall. Arrive early afternoon, rest completely, eat a warm meal, and prepare for the summit night. The final 1,200m of altitude above Kibo Hut will be covered tonight. Altitude: 4,700m. Accommodation: Kibo Hut (stone hut). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut (Summit Night)

Midnight start. The Marangu summit trail switchbacks up the volcanic scree to Hans Meyer Cave, then continues to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim — for many climbers, the hardest section of the entire route. From Gilman's, the rim traverse leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Summit sunrise. Descend back to Kibo Hut and continue all the way down to Horombo for a full rest. Altitude: 5,895m (summit), 3,720m (camp). Accommodation: Horombo Hut (A-frame). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Arusha

Final descent on the familiar trail through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Summit certificates presented at the gate. Porter team tips and farewells. Transfer back to Arusha for a celebratory lunch. Altitude: 1,830m (gate). Accommodation: Arusha lodge. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
