Lake Natron sits in the remote Rift Valley at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Africa's most active volcano. Its vivid crimson-red colour comes from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its hyper-alkaline waters - yet this caustic environment is the primary breeding ground for East Africa's flamingo population.

This is not a mainstream destination. The roads are rough, the heat is unforgiving, and the landscape is completely unlike anywhere else in Tanzania. That is precisely the point.
