The most remote landscape in Tanzania
Lake Natron sits in the remote Rift Valley at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Africa's most active volcano. Its vivid crimson-red colour comes from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its hyper-alkaline waters - yet this caustic environment is the primary breeding ground for East Africa's flamingo population.
This is not a mainstream destination. The roads are rough, the heat is unforgiving, and the landscape is completely unlike anywhere else in Tanzania. That is precisely the point. Natron rewards the traveller who wants something completely different — a lunar landscape, wild volcanic terrain, and the sense of standing somewhere most people will never reach.

The Rift Valley story
The Chemistry
Alkaline Waters
Lake Natron reaches pH 10.5 - nearly as caustic as ammonia. The red colour comes from haloarchaea: salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in conditions nothing else can survive.
2 Million Birds
Flamingo Breeding
Lake Natron is the primary breeding site for Lesser Flamingos in East Africa - up to 2 million birds nest here when conditions are right. Nothing else looks like it.
Active Volcano
Ol Doinyo Lengai
The lake sits in the shadow of Ol Doinyo Lengai -Africa's only active carbonatite volcano. Its eruptions are visible from the lakeshore at night.
Deep Geology
The Rift Valley
Lake Natron is part of the East African Rift - one of the largest geological features on Earth, where the African continent is slowly splitting apart.
The Springs
Engare Sero
At the lake's southern end, freshwater hot springs feed small waterfalls. Prehistoric footprints discovered in the area date back over 5,000 years.
Natron Questions, Answered.
Everything you need to know about Natron safari
Is Lake Natron worth visiting?
For the right traveller, absolutely. Remote, challenging, and unlike anything else in Tanzania. If you've visited the main parks and want somewhere genuinely different, Natron is one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes.
Can I see flamingos?
The flamingo population is present year-round, but breeding numbers (up to 2 million birds) depend on conditions. The dry season typically offers the most reliable access
How do I get to Lake Natron?
By road from Arusha, approximately 5–6 hours on rough roads through Maasai country. The journey itself is part of the experience.
Can I climb Ol Doinyo Lengai from Lake Natron?
Yes - Natron is the base for the Lengai ascent. The standard route begins before midnight and reaches the summit at dawn. We cover both in our Off the Beaten Path itinerary.
