Ol Doinyo Lengai - "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language - rises 2,960 meters from the East African Rift Valley. It is the only active carbonatite volcano on Earth, producing low-temperature black lava that turns white on contact with air.

The summit ascent begins before midnight, reaching the top at dawn in time for sunrise over the Rift Valley, Lake Natron below, and the Serengeti stretching west. Demanding on steep volcanic ash - but one of the most extraordinary experiences in East Africa. Typically combined with a Lake Natron visit.

The ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai

Base Camp

Engare Sero Village

The ascent begins from a Maasai village at the lake's edge. Midnight departure. The air is warm, the volcano glows faintly above. Guides brief, headlamps checked.

0–1,500m

The Lower Slopes

Loose volcanic ash and steep gradients from the very first step. Not a technical climb but it demands fitness and determination. The valley drops away behind you in darkness.

1,500–2,500m

The Mid Slopes

The angle steepens. Black carbonatite lava cooling white underfoot - like snow that crumbles. The Rift Valley begins to reveal itself far below.

The Final Push

The steepest section. Arms and legs. Wind picks up. The sky begins to lighten at the eastern horizon. Just keep moving.
