The park that defines African safari

The Serengeti covers 14,763 km² of open savannah in northern Tanzania, forming part of the same ecosystem as Kenya's Masai Mara. It supports one of the continent's highest concentrations of predators — lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs — all resident year-round, in every season.

The annual Great Migration is the world's largest mammal movement: over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle circling through the Serengeti and back again. It follows seasonal rains — calving on the southern plains from January to March, river crossings in the north from July to October. But the Serengeti is not just about the migration. On any given morning, before the sun is fully up, something extraordinary is happening.

A glimpse of what awaits

The migration calendar

January – March

Calving Season

Two million wildebeest arrive on the southern Serengeti plains. Up to 8,000 calves born daily. Cheetah, lion, and hyena follow the herds.

mid-March to mid-May

The Long Rains

The migration begins moving north. The plains are quieter and lush — this is one of the most beautiful times in the Serengeti.

July – August

Northward Push

The herds congregate on the northern plains and begin testing the Mara River. Tension builds at every potential crossing.

August – October

River Crossings

The iconic crossings. Crocodiles, chaos, and the raw mathematics of survival. This is what most visitors come to see.

November – December

The Return South

The migration circles back to the southern plains, following the short rains. The cycle begins again.

Serengeti Questions, Answered.

Everything you need to know about Serengeti

Are there insects I should know about before visiting the Serengeti?

The Serengeti is generally comfortable, but Tse Tse flies are present in some areas, especially during the heat of the day. Repellants have little effect on them - the best way to avoid bites is to wear light-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, white) and avoid dark shades like navy, black, or brown. For mosquitoes in the evenings, long sleeves and trousers are recommended when sitting outside. Lodges provide nets and room sprays on request.
