Rongai Route

The only route up Kilimanjaro from the north — quieter trails, better wildlife, and the drier side of the mountain for wet-season climbs. Rongai is the pick when solitude matters.

Why Climb Rongai

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro trail that approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border, and it is the quietest way up the mountain. It starts on the drier northern slopes, crosses the high-altitude "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo, and summits at Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters before descending the southeast side. What sets Rongai apart is solitude — while the southern routes fill up in peak season, the northern approach stays quiet, so you get a more remote, wilder version of Kilimanjaro. It is also the drier side of the mountain, which makes Rongai the route we point people toward for wet-season climbs.

Was Sie erwartet

  • Day 1: Rongai Gate → Simba Camp

Drive north from Arusha toward the Kenyan border — a longer transfer that takes you to the remote Rongai Gate (1,950m), the only entry point on the mountain's northern side. Register with rangers and begin climbing through open farmland before entering the forest zone. Simba Camp sits in the upper heathland with early views north toward Kenya. Altitude: 2,625m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 2: Simba Camp → Kikelewa Camp

The forest gives way to open moorland as you climb through the characteristic vegetation of the northern slopes — drier and more open than the lush southern approaches. Giant groundsel begins to appear. Kikelewa Camp sits in a rocky valley with wide views of the Kenyan plains stretching north. Far fewer other climbers than on any southern route. Altitude: 3,630m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 3: Kikelewa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A steep climb to the dramatic Mawenzi Tarn — a glacial lake nestled in the saddle between Kilimanjaro's two peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi. The jagged spires of Mawenzi (5,149m) tower above camp. This is one of the most visually striking campsites on the mountain. The northern approach puts you in a part of Kilimanjaro that most climbers never see. Altitude: 4,330m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp → Kibo Hut (Acclimatization)

A half-day hike across the high-altitude saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — the stark, barren plateau at the mountain's heart. Arrive at Kibo Hut early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day resting, hydrating, and receiving the summit night briefing. The landscape here is pure volcanic desert — no vegetation, just rock and the looming summit wall. Altitude: 4,700m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut (Summit Night)

Midnight departure from Kibo Hut. The Rongai summit approach follows the same northern crater route to Hans Meyer Cave and Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, then the final push along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. Sunrise from the summit. Descend back to Kibo Hut and then continue all the way down to Horombo Hut. Altitude: 5,895m (summit), 3,720m (camp). Accommodation: Horombo Hut (A-frame). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Arusha

Final descent on the Marangu route through the moorland and back into the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Summit certificates presented at the gate. Your porter team receives their tips. Transfer back to Arusha for a celebration lunch and overnight. Altitude: 1,830m (gate). Accommodation: Arusha lodge. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
