Why Climb Machame
The Machame Route is the most popular trail up Mount Kilimanjaro, nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for its dramatic scenery and demanding character. It approaches from the south, climbs through five habitat zones, and finishes at Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the roof of Africa. Machame is popular for a reason: the scenery is spectacular, the trail is varied, and the "climb high, sleep low" profile builds in real acclimatization on the way up. The trade-off is company — this is the busiest route on the mountain, so you will share the trail and the camps, especially in peak season.

Was Sie erwartet
Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp
Drive from Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m), the busiest trailhead on Kilimanjaro. After park registration and a final kit check, you enter the rainforest — dense, green, and alive with birdsong. The trail climbs steadily through the canopy to Machame Camp at the forest edge. Your first evening on the mountain with views beginning to open above the treeline. Altitude: 3,000m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Lunch & DinnerDay 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp
Above the forest, the vegetation transforms into open heathland — giant heather, everlastings, and the first tree senecios. The trail climbs a steep ridge before levelling onto the plateau toward Shira Camp with wide open views of the summit cone and the Shira Plateau. Altitude: 3,840m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerDay 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
The signature Machame acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower (4,600m) on the Southern Circuit, gaining significant altitude before descending to Barranco Camp in the valley below. The altitude swing — up to 4,600m then down to 3,976m — is one of the most effective acclimatization techniques on the mountain. Passes through the distinctive alpine desert zone. Altitude: 3,976m (camp). Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerDay 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (Barranco Wall)
The Barranco Wall — a near-vertical rock scramble at the start of the day — is the most memorable section of the Machame route. It looks more serious than it is: your guides know every handhold and the fixed route is well established. At the top, sweeping views of the Southern Circuit reward the effort. Ridge walk to Karanga Camp through alpine desert. Altitude: 4,035m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerDay 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (High Camp)
Short day by distance, significant by altitude. The trail climbs steadily to Barafu — your high camp and the last stop before the summit. Arrive early, eat well, rest as much as possible, and receive the summit night briefing from your guide. The terrain above Barafu is rock and scree: all vegetation ends here. Altitude: 4,673m. Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerDay 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp (Summit Night)
Midnight start by headlamp. The summit night on Machame follows the Rebmann Glacier route to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim, then a final push along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. Cold, thin air, and a sunrise that justifies every step. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp the same day — a full summit day that tests your reserves. Altitude: 5,895m (summit), 3,100m (camp). Accommodation: Tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerDay 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha
Final descent through the rainforest on the Mweka trail to the gate, where your porter team receives their tips and summit certificates are presented. Transfer back to Arusha for a celebration lunch. Altitude: 1,640m (gate). Accommodation: Arusha lodge. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
